The Basic Parts of a Garage Door

Simple in concept, garage doors can get complicated pretty quickly. Since we work with them every day, it’s easy to forget that most home and business owners don’t understand the basic parts of a garage door. To make sure that you can adequately consider only garage doors that will fit your need, here is a quick list of the basic parts and what they do.

Section Joints (2) – The joints in between the panels of a sectional garage door. These are what allow each garage door to fold as it’s retracted into the ceiling

Bottom Brackets (3) – The two brackets that are attached to the lower corners of the garage door. These typically include rollers and are connected to the cables that lift the door. Well build corner brackets are a sign of a high quality garage door.

Cable Drum (4) – Grooved drums on the torsion spring shaft that lifting cables wind around when the door opens

Torsion Springs (5) – Another method used to lift garage doors, torsion springs are usually mounted above a closed door and most often situated parallel to the opening and above the door. Typically these are wound very tightly and should be handled with great care to prevent injury.

Extension Springs (6) – One method used to lift garage doors that is mounted just above the horizontal garage door track and is perpendicular to the closed garage door. These are typically a good option of there is limited space above the door.

Rear Hanger Track (7) – The point at which the track that guides the garage door rollers is fastened to garage ceiling.

Hanger Track (8) – The track that secures the garage door rollers to the building and allows the door to freely move up and down.
